| Using incentives to increase employee safety on con-struction sites can work very well, or very poorly. Incentive programs that are ignored or those that mask reporting of “near miss” and minor incidents are bad for your bottom line and they can send the wrong message. Conversely, incentive programs that encourage employees to choose safer behaviors (both on and off the job), increase near miss reporting, and encourage use of JSA’s can pay off in enhanced productivity, safer sites, and a better company to work for. Review some basic psychology you can use to get the results that your incentive program was intended achieve. Finally we’ll review some sample incentive programs and rate them for effectiveness.
