This study identifies crane-related deaths and injuries in construction, and it will provide context for our track on crane related safety in construction. Deaths for 1992-2006 were identified from the BLS Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), and crane deaths and injuries for 2008 captured from Internet searches. The CFOI data identified 632 construction deaths from 1992 – 2006, an average of 42 per year. The main causes were overhead power line electrocutions (25%), struck by crane loads (21%), crane collapses (14%), and struck by crane booms/jibs (12%). From January to August, 2008, Internet searches captured 48 crane-related deaths and 108 injuries from 67 construction crane accidents. Of these, 4 deaths and 21 injuries were of bystanders and rescue workers. Then, learn about investigating crane accidents. This presentation will cover investigation highlights for crane and rigging accidents, with particular attention to mobile and tower cranes. Emphasis will be placed on how to handle large site investigations, including handling artifacts and properly preserving evidence. Several case studies will be presented, with particular focus on some of the notable incidents in 2008.
