According to OSHA, the language barrier is respon-sible for 1 in 4 accidents in the workplace, and Latino workers’ constitute 1 in 3 deaths in construction, up 72% since 1992. A recent study estimates the US Latino population will constitute approximately one-third of the total US population by the year 2050, and this growth is expected to be strongly reflected in the construction workforce. How do you communicate effectively? Whether you’re a site supervisor, safety manager or a coworker, it is important to know some basic Spanish and be aware of dif-fering cultural workplace and safety perspectives.
